The closure of station ticket offices will inconvenience passengers

Labour's Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle MP, responding to the Government's decision to approve the closure of ticket offices and reductions in opening hours..

"This Government's decision to allow train companies to close ticket offices and reduce opening hours comes after months of denials from Ministers that this was being considered. Ministers have once again put the wrong people first by giving in to these demands from private train companies, instead of standing up for passengers and blocking these closures. Passengers are already facing inflation-busting fare rises of up to 11 per cent a year and will now find it harder to get the cheapest available fare in what is an overly complex system of ticketing.

"The Government routinely talks the talk on greater devolution within the rail industry, yet once again is making decisions over local services in Whitehall. It's time to enable communities to have a greater say over fares and services, including local stations, through devolving greater responsibility to accountable transport authorities."
