GMC brings together UK healthcare leaders to discuss fairness

The General Medical Council (GMC) is bringing together healthcare leaders from across the UK to explore the challenge of fostering greater fairness in their work.

The regulator is putting the spotlight on the importance of regulating in a fair and impartial way at 'Being Fair: challenges and opportunities', a half-day conference chaired by Dame Julie Mellor, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman on 12 September.

The conference – the first of its kind organised by the GMC - has been designed to stimulate debate among more than 140 attendees from a range of organisations including the BMA, the Department of Health, Royal Colleges and other healthcare regulators, on how to address the shared challenges in this area.

Delegates will explore emerging issues for doctors, patients and the wider public including progression for different groups of doctors, the impact of revalidation, maintaining the medical register and dealing with concerns and complaints.

Speakers include Elisabeth Davies, Chair of the Legal Services Consumer Panel, Professor Sir Peter Rubin, Chair of the GMC and Dean Royles, Director, NHS Employers.

Niall Dickson, Chief Executive of the GMC, said:

'Fairness needs to be at the heart of everything we do from inspecting education provision to assessing overseas applicants for registration.

'And when it comes to complaints about doctors they need to feel that they will be treated fairly and patients need to know their safety will always come first.

'Our ability to protect patients relies on maintaining this trust which is why we have brought together a range of leaders in health to explore what more we can do to be fair and how we can support each other in achieving this.'

The GMC has an extensive programme of work underway to ensure that it is being fair in its work. This includes producing guidance for medical schools on making reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities, auditing each stage and publishing statistics on its fitness to practise procedures, and working with other organisations to ensure that all doctors have a route to revalidation.
