Reports in today's Mail on Sunday that Queen's composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies supports an independent Scotland have been warmly welcomed by the SNP.

The article quotes the Master of the Queen's Music as saying 'For me the conversion to independence has been a slow and gradual and thoughtful progression... I know some people may be surprised, but I have arrived at an honest place – and art, if nothing else, is about honesty.'

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Angus Robertson MP said:

"The Yes campaign for an independent Scotland is attracting support from across society, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' backing is extremely welcome.

"The range of voices who support a Yes vote in 2014 is broad-based and growing, as more and more people agree with the compelling case that the best people to make decisions about Scotland are the people who care most about Scotland - the people who live here, and elected representatives who are 100 per cent accountable to them."
