"Superb" selective strike action over pensions in the Scottish NHS has been taking place over the past week to increase pressure on the Edinburgh government for a "Scottish solution to all aspects of pensions changes", UNISON Scotland declared today

The union is insisting this must include the first year employee contribution increases of up to 2.4%, which it says are "effectively a pensions tax on health workers".

Pensions are a devolved matter in Scotland and ministers have agreed to talks, starting on 28 March, over medium and long-term changes to the NHS Pension Scheme.

But they have made it clear that they are not prepared to negotiate over the first year contribution increases, and regulations to implement them were tabled in the Scottish Parliament this week.

Industrial action this week involved members at the central decontamination unit, based at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine.

"Staff within the CDU were superb in defending the pensions of all our members in the NHS and are grateful for the support shown by other UNISON branches," commented Ayrshire and Arran branch secretary Ewing Hope.

Further industrial action in Lanarkshire, Lothian and greater Glasgow is planned over the coming weeks.
