Health Select Committee member and new Conservative MP, Dr Daniel Poulter, opened the Federation’s roundtable event at Conservative Party Conference

Addressing MPs, councillors and practitioners from across the country, he made the case for greater integration between health and social care and highlighted the vital role that housing has to play in a reformed health system.

Federation chief executive David Orr echoed Dr Poulter’s views, and called on those present to press government to ensure that all Health and Wellbeing Boards include a housing representative.

Mr Orr said: 'Health and wellbeing boards could become the place for important debates about how we best integrate housing, health and social care and deal with the challenge of an ageing population.'

Older people's housing and support

Mr Orr's remarks gave context to the meeting as MPs, councilors and practitioners discussed the challenge of ensuring that older people have the housing and support that they need.

Following the publication of the Dilnot Report and with the Health and Social Care Bill currently making its way through Parliament, it was a timely debate that touched on many of the pressing concerns of housing associations.

Those present commended the innovative work of housing associations and their important role in preventing future health problems.
