TOPIC: Sustainable tourism as a means to balance environmental and economic needs

Sustainable tourism as a means to balance environmental and economic needs 2 months, 1 week ago #1

At Hidden Britain we work with literally hundreds of places - towns, villages and communities - across the UK to help them attract more visitors and share their landscapes and natural environment for both economic and social benefits.

Successful groups seem to intuitively 'get' the following fundamentals:

The environment and landscape needs to be nurtured if it's going to be promoted as an asset and an attraction
Not everyone will respect the environment whilst experiencing it so education is important
Giving people reasons to keep coming back brings economic benefits for residents and visitors alike and that means proactively doing the above two points frequently and consistently
In 2012 we have to be prepared to help ourselves and not expect government support for everything

On a more philosophical note, it would help if policy-makers, investors and the banks could also stop focusing on short-termist profits to help!  we're hoping the conference on 12th June will encourage sustainability in real terms, not just pay lip service.  What do others want to see?

In these changing times it is important that the balance between tourism, environment and the local economy is driven by the local community. Yes information is important but the balance must be driven by those who environment it is rather than 'top down' management from outside, to be successful and sustainable it has to be a true partnership.
