TOPIC: Do antimicrobial Products offer cost effective solutions?

Do antimicrobial Products offer cost effective solutions? 3 weeks ago #1

In this world of cost cutting and best value is it cost effective to invest in antimicrobial products or is it simply an expensive tick box?

In this day and age I believe the only way forward is in investing in appropriately trained staff and to empower these staff to ensure best practice across all disciplines. Antimicrobial products can aid this process but will not be enough by themselves. In my opinion the use of antimicrobial products could be reduced drastically if Healthcare Professionals adhere to basic and special precautions.

There is no doubt that antimicrobial products represent our very last tool to fight against human infections when all other defence barriers failed down. Unfortunately, the phenomena of continuous development of the antimicrobial resistance makes this resort weaker and weaker, our patients more and more vulnerable and the financial burden for effective treatment higher and higher. The only option we have for revising this trend is to reinforce the rest of the available means to prevent infections and to keep antimicrobials as an ultimate resource for clearly defined and targeted treatment.

The judicious use of antibiotics and more restrictive prescribing would be more cost effective than investing in expensive research and development for new agents.

The idea of antimicrobial products for everything and everywhere seemed to be a good idea few decades ago. We thought that we would be able to kill pathogens using these products and we solve the infection problem forever. There was also a belief that in few decades we wouldn’t need microbiologist and infection disease specialist anymore.

In the battle against the infections the pathogens seem to go a step forth in front of us. If we invent new drugs against them, they develop resistance; they find the escape mechanism very quickly. Therefore we have to change our mind and strategies of coping with this problem.

I’m quite convinced that the antimicrobial products are extremely valuable if we know how to use them, when to use them. However the chance of overusing and making them invaluable is very high due to these products are widely available, and their usage is not restricted.

Our aim should be finding their place in the management of infections and making sure than they are not used out of indication. In this case we are going to have valuable weapons against pathogens for longer.
