I suggest that constant or regular check up on the water faucets and check up on the water supplies for bacterias/parasites/protozoans that can be harboured in those areas. They need to be disinfected and check if there are leaks or pipe breaks to prevent contamination of water.

hot/cold water taps, showers, toilets, etc are turned on/flushed at least twice weekly, water to run for a set period of time, care taken of areas that are not used frequently, these will be the danger areas

In order to prevent this from happening, a rigorous system of inspection of the healthcare environment; adherence to cleaning standards and timely reporting and review of individual case on waterborne infections in such area identified as “high risk” must take place.
A good multi-disciplinary approach to the issue will be necessary to encourage participation of each member of staff in all levels in order to contribute to effective infection prevention and control

In our NICU which is also a new unit and there are hand washing facilities, hand gel and instruction all staff and parents and visitors.
there has No recorded incident in our unit.
today the Strategic Health Authority is visiting the hospital and looking at INFECTION CONTROL in the hospital.
Two weeks back a baby came back form Addenbrook Hospital and when we swab the baby it was MRSA positive .It was not from our hospital and immediately we put in place the protocol for the elemination of MRSA for mother and baby and they were barrier nursed.

In NICU there is a strong pathway and algorithm for mothers whose babies are admitted into NICU expressed breast milk for their babies.
this ensured the health of the premature babies.

Regular flushing of ALL water outlets – run water for continuous 5 minutes per week, with regular water treatment. Decommission all unused taps, tabs, sinks, etc and remove all dead legs.

We could make sure that this never happens again by using water filters to filter all water.
Use sterile water to wash all new born babies.
