The development of the programme stemmed from senior leaders in the NHS expressing concern because their ever growing agenda did not seem to allow time to do the things that made a difference

Dr Helen Bevan, Director of Service Transformation at the NHS Institute said, ‘research undertaken within the NHS with chief executives, directors and assistants has shown that the biggest area for improvement and time saved is in meetings management.,  We found chief executives spent at least 70 per cent of their time in meetings over an average 54 hour week. In addition, very few meetings were found to produce decisions or move the agenda forward.’ Dr Bevan continued, ‘going through The Productive Leader programme can produce dramatic results. One NHS test site reduced the average length of their meetings by 30 minutes.’

In addition to the Meetings Management module, there are modules focusing on Email and Workload Management.  By participating in the facilitated sessions, it is possible to make significant improvements in personal productivity.

Lynn Callard, national lead for the programme at the NHS Institute, told us: ‘When we started developing The Productive Leader, we didn’t realise what a vital role that the PAs have in increasing team productivity. We found that roles are responsibilities between the leader and PA are often unclear and this leads to duplication of work. By participating in the programme together, the leader and PA can eradicate this replicated effort and save valuable leadership hours.’

The NHS Institute is making The Productive Leader masterclasses available to all NHS executive teams and their PAs up to February 2009 and the response is very positive. It shows that the NHS leadership community is as ready to embrace the principles of productive leadership as the leaders of the world’s most successful global companies.

Andrew Cash, chief executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said, ’the programme provided a busy executive team with valuable headroom and a practically-focused programme to work on which improved our effectiveness both as individuals and as a team.’  He continued, ‘at a time when our colleagues in the Trust as a whole are seeking to improve their productivity and effectiveness, it was good for the executive team to lead by example.

This programme is about the whole team – the PAs made an outstanding and invaluable contribution.’
