Yvette Cooper MP, Labour's Shadow Home Secretary and Minister for Women & Equalities, said:

"As more and more Conservative MPs come out against equal marriage, the important issue of equality and respect for same sex relationships must not get lost in the debate on Tory internecine warfare.

"Couples who love each other and want to make a long term commitment should be able to get married whatever their gender or sexuality. Marriage should be reason to celebrate not discriminate.

"Just as with civil partnerships in 2004, we look forward to passing this Bill into law with Labour votes.

"Marriage as an institution has undergone repeated reform and modernisation over hundreds of years and needs to again. It now needs to reflect the equal value we place on long term loving relationships for same sex couples.

"Surveys show the majority of people support marriage for same sex couples, the vast majority of Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs support it. I hope that Tory rows will not prevent strong support in Parliament for this legislation today."
