Caroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said in response to research by consumer group Which? showing the six major energy suppliers received over four million complaints in 2011

“Soaring energy bills are driving up inflation and contributing to the cost of living crisis afflicting millions of families. But as this research by Which? shows, with over 4 million complaints last year, energy companies are failing their customers and the public. The Government must get a grip and come down hard on any abuses by the energy giants.”

Caroline Flint MP, who will be leading an Opposition Day Debate for Labour on Wednesday on energy prices and the cost of living, added:

“Families struggling with their energy bills need real help now, but this Government is completely out of touch with the pressures on hard-working families. Labour is prepared to stand up to powerful vested interests in the energy industry and to come up with plans that help families and pensioners now, including by forcing energy companies to guarantee that those over 75 will be placed on the cheapest tariff for their gas and electricity. For the long-term, we need fundamental reform to make our energy market work in the public interest.”
