The CBI today commented on the Environmental Audit Committee’s report on carbon budgets

Dr Neil Bentley, CBI Deputy Director-General, said:

We want an economy that is low-carbon and competitive. A review of the carbon budget is sensible and will ensure the UK doesn’t get out of step with European competitors, but what’s really important is that the Government delivers a clear framework for companies to invest with confidence.

“The Committee is right to call for an impact assessment of the carbon budgets on jobs and production, because energy intensive industries are crucial for building the new low-carbon economy.

“We have always backed mandatory carbon reporting, which helps companies monitor and reduce emissions, but to be effective, it should be phased in, simple to follow and avoid duplicating other reporting schemes.”
