Liberal Democrat Conference have passed International Cooperation on the Environment, which calls on the UK Government to take a lead on creating a more sustainable economy and cleaner environment

 The motion calls for:

  • Other EU countries to adopt the UK carbon emission reduction targets
  • The UK government to work with the G77 on develop Sustainable Development Goals on food, water and energy
  • Reform of the European Emissions Trading Scheme

Commenting, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on Environment, Andrew George said:
"Our climate and our environment don't stop at the white cliffs of Dover so nor should our work on providing a cleaner and better environment for us and our children.

"Crucially, we need to work with other countries to support the poorest nations and focus on sustainable food, energy and water supplies that work for many generations to come. We can only achieve this if we work together, through the EU and the UN.

"The UK is setting some of the highest environmental standards in the world, for example hugely ambitious carbon emission reduction targets. That is why Liberal Democrats believe the Coalition Government should do the right thing and take a lead internationally on these issues."
