British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower, SSE and ScottishPower are supporting Citizens Advice's Big Energy Saving Week (22 - 27 October 2012).
Throughout the week they will be urging their customers to speak to them, at events across the country or on the phone, to see how they can save money through help with insulation and checking they are on the best deal.
Funded by Britain's largest energy companies, Citizens Advice's Big Energy Saving Week is run in partnership with Energy Saving Trust, the Government, the regulator and other consumer groups to provide practical advice on managing energy bills. It is the second time this year that a national campaign week has been run, urging people to take action to help keep their homes warm, particularly with winter approaching.
This year, gas and electricity companies will be spending £275 million on help for customers in difficulty, especially the elderly and people on certain benefits. This includes:
- free or heavily subsidised wall and loft insulation
- access to trust funds
- a priority service register
- the funding of the Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99) which provides free, independent advice on managing energy bills.
Commenting on this initiative, Angela Knight CBE, Chief Executive at Energy UK, said:
"We are delighted to be working with Citizens Advice and others this Big Energy Saving Week as making people aware of the help available to them is important. Energy companies recognise that the cost of gas and electricity, as well as a whole range of other household bills, is a real concern for many people in these difficult financial times. The energy companies are spending around £275 million on a range of initiatives to help vulnerable customers keep warm. So as winter approaches, anyone who is worried about paying their fuel bills should call their energy supplier in the first instance or call the free and independent Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99."
During Big Energy Saving Week, there will be around 400 events across Britain giving advice and information to people on saving money on their energy bills including two big events in London and Bridgend. Many of the energy suppliers will be attending these events to provide advice. Information on these events can be found at www.bigenergysavingweek.org.uk , or through your local CAB.
