Cathy Jamieson MP, Labour's Shadow Treasury Minister, responding to today's inflation figures, said

"Despite expectations of a fall, it's worrying that inflation remains high and prices are continuing to rise so much faster than wages.

"But rather than easing the squeeze, the Government is adding to the cost of living crisis for people on middle and low incomes.

"In the New Year millions of families and pensioners face rising energy bills, the granny tax, and cuts to working tax credit and child benefit, while 8,000 millionaires get a tax cut.

"This out of touch Government has got its priorities all wrong. Instead of giving a £3 billion tax cut only to the very richest people in the country David Cameron and George Osborne should be helping striving families who are struggling with the rising cost of living."
