Pensions campaign sees record recruitment in London

UNISON's London region is experiencing record levels of recruitment, as every branch is working hard to deliver the union's message on pensions
September has been the best month for recruiting that the region has had for five years.
"Since the ballot was announced, we have seen unprecedented levels of activity at branch and workplace level," said London regional secretary Linda Perks. "As a result, recruitment has increased by 35% on our average monthly figures for this year."
UNISON is balloting 1.1 million members across the UK for industrial action over proposed changes to pensions, which will make public sector employees work longer, pay more and get less when they retire.
Ms Perks said that every London branch had a pensions action plan and was working hard to deliver a 'yes' vote with a maximum turnout.
"We have initiatives ranging from photo stunts with Ken Livingstone to open mass meetings, from desk drops around council and college buildings and hospital wards, to campaigning in the local community. We even have promotional bags of chocolate coins with the message 'this is what the government expects you to live on'.
"The region has a designated pensions campaign room with mass supplies of 'vote yes' and other publicity materials. And every member of staff in the region is involved in supporting the campaign in one form or another.
"We want a massive 'yes' vote in London," added Ms Perks. "And with the strength of feeling amongst members, activists and staff working together, we are confident we will achieve it."
UNISON has approached its members in the biggest industrial action ballot in history. The first day of action is scheduled for 30 November.
At the same time, the union has made it clear that it is willing to negotiate "any time, any place", if ministers demonstrate that they are interested in serious talks.
