Sheffield Hallam University has had a fresh endorsement of its green credentials by reaching a new certificate for its energy management
The university has received the ISO 50001 (Energy Management System) standard following audits by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
ISO 50001 is an international standard for energy management which assists organisations in their drive for energy efficiency, reduced consumption, a lower carbon footprint and lower costs.
This follows the University also being awarded the ISO14001 certificate in Environmental Management at the end of last year making it one of a small number of organisations to have both certifications across all its operations.
Mark Swales, director of estates and facilities at Sheffield Hallam, said: “ISO 50001 is a world class standard and framework for us to build on for the future. Many organisations tendering for research require us to demonstrate our commitment to energy and environmental management and these achievements compliment our world class research.
"These certificates also demonstrate our support to our staff and students through saving money which would be spent on utilities to put back into teaching. I'd like to thank staff in the Facilities Directorate and staff from across our faculties who worked together to help us achieve this."
The University aims to lower the organisation’s carbon emissions by reducing energy used to operate our buildings through energy efficiency, improved communications and the use of low carbon technologies.
Staff are encouraged to take ownership of what they can control through smarter operational and behavioural best practice via supporting procedure change and smarter procurement.
The certificate was presented to members of the University's Energy Management team in the Cantor Building on Friday 9 March by Stephen Hudson, EMEA Product Marketing Manager for Sustainability at BSI.
Stephen said: “I'm very proud to present this certificate to Sheffield Hallam University. This standard was only published in June last year and to achieve this along with the ISO 14001 certificate is a great achievement."
