The Royal College of Nursing welcomes the government’s focus on quality in the NHS in England but warns that new plans published yesterday will not be without risk
The comments were made in response to the publication of Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS – the Health White Paper, which sets out the government's long-term vision for the future of the NHS in England.
RCN Chief Executive & General Secretary Dr Peter Carter says:
"We welcome the commitment to include nurses alongside GPs in making decisions about local health services and look forward to seeing more detail about how this will be achieved in practice. However, in economically challenging times there will be some difficult discussions with patients about their care and what is affordable, which has the potential to change the relationship patients have with nurses and doctors.
“In these tough economic times, it is more important than ever that public money is spent wisely. A robust system will be essential to ensure those holding the purse-strings, as well as managers and politicians, are fully accountable and that every penny is spent with good patient care in mind.”
The RCN will review the document in further detail and looks forward to working with the government to help shape a health service with a focus on good quality patient care.
This White Paper applies only to the NHS in England. The devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are responsible for developing their own health policies.
